  • Responsible for insuring that the medical and emotional needs of the patient are met throughout the entire birthing process.
  • Educate patient and their families on the birthing process and relevant medications and interventions.
  • Support the phases of labor in a normal pregnancy with intermittent fetal monitoring and nonpharmacologic  methods of pain relief such as controlled breathing, oral hydration, positioning and massage.
  • Manage labor induction with prostaglandin drug treatment or IV oxytocin.  
  • Assess patient for high risk status and notify members of the team.
  • Administer medications such as Methergine, Hemabate and Cytotec  for uterine atony, antihypertensive medications such as Labetalol IV, and Hydralazine IV  for preeclampsia , and tocolytic agents such as Terbutaline and Nifedipine for preterm labor.
  • Circulate in the operating room to support Cesarean section birth.
