  • Conductor responsible for the safe operation of switches and movement of freight cars.
  • BNSF Conductors are in charge of, and responsible for all train movements to be made safely and efficiently. Generally required to be on call 24/7 and work in all weather conditions. (extreme cold, or extreme heat) Required to take call and be to work with in 1 hour and 15 minutes. 
  • Also responsible for leading a 3 man crew when working in yard jobs in Williston North Dakota. In charge of organizing and building trains and logistically placing cars to get sent out to other locations, or to supply customer needs. I was also responsible for making sure trains were operated within strict compliance with company rules and Federal Railroad Administration rules, especially when handling cars that were considered hazardous.   
  • Required to follow strict rules for train movements, and safety outlined by BNSF and the Federal Railroad Administration.  I was instructed to take yearly training classes to stay familiar with always changing rules.

  • Monitor lights indicating obstructions or other trains ahead and watch for car and truck traffic at crossings to stay alert to potential hazards.
  • Regulate vehicle speed and the time spent at each stop, in order to maintain schedules.
  • Report delays, mechanical problems, and emergencies to supervisors or dispatchers, using radios.
  • Complete reports, including shift summaries and incident or accident reports.
  • Attend meetings on driver and passenger safety in order to learn ways in which job performance might be affected.

  • Confer with engineers or traffic control center personnel via radiophones to issue or receive information track conditions, delays, or oncoming trains.
  • Direct engineers to move cars to fit planned train configurations, combining or separating cars to make up or break up trains.
