correctional officer

  • Worked 1 and 1/2 years at ISCC in G block during that time I supervised Closed Custody, Protective Custody, and General population housed in the Unit for drug diversion. (Throughout my time in that unit the housed population was constantly changing and being moved.)
  • G block was a tough but rewarding challenge that required constant vigilance  and required all staff members to be aware of their surroundings as well as being familiar with the inmate population we were supervising.
  • During my time at ISCC I responded to several serious incidents including Fights, Serious self injurious behavior and staff assaults. I consider these serious learning experiences and while I wish they had not happened I learned from these situations and know I can handle them.
  • From November 2018-Current I have been unit staff in Unit 16 at ISCI this has also been a rewarding challenge as this population requires a much different approach compared to who I have supervised previously.
  • Early in my time working in Unit 16 my direct supervisor was out for an extended period of time due to unforeseen circumstances. While this was a struggle it gave me the opportunity to act as a leader for the other staff members in Unit 16 as I was during that time the most senior staff member for approximately 3 months. I believe this gave me some insight and knowledge into what it would take to be at the Corporal level for IDOC in any unit where my skills were needed. I know I still have things to learn but I know I am ready for the challenge.
